Sometimes you have to go to the very end to find the very best . . . at the foot of South Africa this spectacular 150-mile journey through the wide band between the Indian Ocean and three sets of mountains and inland makes a great four day tour. The famed Garden Route is a floral paradise with sands that are wide and white, the double majesty of elephants on land and whales close to the shore, forest walks and some of the continent's most unhurried towns.
Your Garden Route trip begins in Port Elizabeth which you leave and head for Plettenberg Bay. You travel along the coastline to the scenic Tsitsikamma National Park where you stop for lunch. Tsitsikamma originates from the Khoi-Khoi language used by the local Inqwa Tribe that lived in the area some 1,700 years ago meaning "a place of sparkling abundant water". In the afternoon you continue on to Plettenberg Bay for overnight and dinner.
Get up-close-and-personal with nature today at the Knysna Elephant Park. With the help of the resident African elephants and well-informed guides, you will learn about the sad and mystical story of the Knysna Elephants - the world's Southern most elephants. After lunch you return to Plettenberg Bay for a visit to Birds of Eden and then there's an optional Whale and Dolphin experience. Dinner and overnight accommodation in Plettenberg Bay.
After breakfast today leave your hotel and take an informative cruise up the Keurbooms River. Continue to the lagoon side town of Knysna – the gem of the Garden Route. Then enjoy some time at leisure at the Knysna Waterfront Complex before travelling to Oudtshoorn – the ‘feather capital’ of the world due to its large ostrich industry. Visit a working ostrich farm for a guided tour before checking into your accommodation in the late afternoon, the De Opstal Country Lodge, where you have dinner.
This morning enjoy a tour of the Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn, before heading to Barrydale, where you stop for lunch. You will be driving along Cape Route 62, which is the tourist route in the Western Cape, offering the shorter, scenic alternative to the N2 highway. Visit the towns of Elgin and Sir Lowry's Pass before arriving in Cape Town in the early evening where this great Garden Route tour comes to an end.
