For so many visitors to South Africa, there's no finer way to see the country than on the popular weekly journeys between Cape Town and Pretoria. From the coast, the 1 600-kilometre route follows an old pioneering trail carved out of the African bushveld, passing through the Cape Winelands and climbing up to the interior through the Hex River Valley. Highlights include visits to the historic village of Matjiesfontein, a 100-year-old refreshment stop in the arid Karoo and Kimberley. We can also arrange for you to take this memorable train trip in reverse.
What a great place to begin your luxury train journey. Time for some exploration of this wonderful city that sits at the foot of Table Mountain before leaving from platform 23 at Cape Town station. The train first heads inland via Worcester arriving at Matjiesfontein in the late afternoon where guests can enjoy a tour of this quaint village. The train departs in the evening as you prepare for a sumptuous meal in the Rovos Rail dining car.
After lunch the train pulls in to Kimberley, the capital of Northern Province in South Africa. You will board a bus in the city centre for a Big Hole and museum tour. The City of De Beers, as it is called, is the diamond boom town that's home to the Big Hole, and you will get a great insight into the world’s largest man-made excavation. Return to the train for dinner.
After your memorable visit to the diamond mines of Kimberley you continue your luxurious Rovos Rail journey north seeing the countryside slip by. Today your train journey comes to an end when you arrive at Capital Park Station, Pretoria. Time to explore the city before continuing your South African adventure or making plans for the journey home.
