Botswana in Style

Description

If you fancy a short safari holiday is some of Africa's most beautiful wildlife areas then this five day trip is just perfect. Your adventure begins in Maun, in the northern part of Botswana, and from there you will fly to the Okavango Delta in the centre of the vast Kalahari Desert to stay at a luxurious camp. Then you fly off to another tented camp in the beautiful Moremi Game Reserve which is rich in animal and bird life. This action packed tour is great if you have never been on safari before or even if you are a seasoned wildlife watcher.

Day 1
Maun to the Savute

On arrival at Maun Airport you will be met by a representative from Belmond Safaris and transferred by shared light aircraft to camp to the Savute region of the Chobe National Park, an area renowned for its high concentration of Elephant and dramatic eco system. In the heart of the Chobe National Park, sometimes referred to as the elephant capital of the world, is the Savute, an area that personifies the eternal contrast of Africa. Where our other two camps celebrate water and lush vegetation, Savute is an objective lesson in aridity. Rain in this dry place is rare and water is precious. You find yourself in harmony with a unique timeless place, removed from city life. In Savute, you realize that precious little has changed on these dry plains since time began. And the realization dawns that you are fortunate and privileged to be in one of the last corners of the planet governed by nature.

Day 2
Savute

Perched on the former banks of the now dry Savute Channel, Savute Elephant Camp offers a spectacular base to explore the area. With a birds' eye view of the adjacent water hole, just metres away from the camp's main building, the impressions created at Savute will last forever. The Savute is a dramatic area to see high concentrations of elephant and lions. Prides up to 40 strong are not uncommon as are sightings of all the other major predators; the endangered wild dog, leopard, cheetah and the hyena. Savute is also renowned for its excellent birding during the summer months (December through March), as well as being home to some very rare rock paintings drawn by the early Bushmen, who once inhabited the region.

Day 3
Savute to Okavango Delta

This morning, after a morning activity, you will be transferred by shared light aircraft to Eagle Island Camp, time to be advised locally. Hidden from the world, deep within Botswana's Okavango Delta, is the paradise we call Eagle Island Camp. Situated on the island of Xaxaba and surrounded by Illala Palms, the camp overlooks a surrounding lagoon fed by the tranquil waterways of the Delta. The area offers exceptionally high quality wildlife viewing with prolific birdlife and mammal sightings. It is also the site of one of the most romantic bars in the world, the Fish Eagle Bar, as voted by the New York Times. The camp offers a cool retreat from the African sun and is shaded by a canopy of indigenous trees. Eagle Island Camp at Xaxaba is one of the Delta's most pristine natural locations, a region of myriad waterways, palm-treed islands and vast flood plains. During the months of April through October the camp offers a choice of game viewing by mokoro (traditional dugout canoe), motorised boat sundowner cruises in the surrounding lagoons. When water levels are low (December through March), morning, afternoon and evening game drives are offered, giving the opportunity to further explore the surrounding islands. For the more intrepid, safari walks are offered all year around.

Day 4
Okavango Delta

Today you will have further opportunity to explore the surrounding areas either on foot, by dug out canoe (mokoro), or by motorboat. The Okavango Delta is one of the world's largest inland water systems, the only inland delta of its kind and a unique oasis of life in the centre of the Kalahari Desert. It stretches over 16,000 square km and supports a staggering variety of animal, plant, fish and birdlife. The water was once thought to have reached the sea, but this is no longer the case. After a series of tectonic uplifts and earthquakes running along geological fault lines, the land at the edge of the Delta now lies lower than that of the surrounding area. Hence the water very rarely flows further south than Maun. The Okavango Delta consists of a multitude of main channels, smaller tributaries and lagoons as well as floodplains, islands and mainland areas. The watercourses are constantly changing due to annual flooding as well as a combination of sediment transport, seismic activity, the construction of termite mounds, and the continual opening up of new channels by feeding hippopotami and the closing of others by new vegetation growth.

Day 5
Okavango Delta to Maun

This morning, after a morning activity, you will be escorted to your awaiting shared light aircraft and transferred to Maun Airport. Upon arrival at Maun Airport you will be met by a Belmond Safaris representative who will assist you with the check-in on Air Botswana departing Maun Airport.

No fault of DialAflight but appalling service from Virgin. Return flight from Johannesburgh to Heathrow cancelled twice - 2 nights in hotel - should have landed Saturday 15th April 06.35 - finally landed Sunday 16th April 21.35!

Appreciate the courtesy calls and attention to detail. Thoroughly happy with your service. Only one tiny niggle which is not down to you - why do airlines put couples in the centre of the four seats - not fair!

You gave me a change of time to my second flight which other people hadn't had which was useful. There is a sense of confidence that if there is a problem with the flights someone else will sort it.
