Location

The Kaimata Retreat is an intimate boutique hotel that offers luxury timber lodge accommodation on New Zealand’s South Island’s east coast. Its housed in an architecturally designed building with a stylish interior and modern amenities for the ultimate in relaxation and comfort, and also boasts a spectacular location overlooking the Otega Peninsula for sweeping views of the still water, coastal birds and wildlife.

Rooms

The hotel’s three rooms boast a contemporary, yet classic and cosy decor that blends a neutral decor, feature wallpaper and classic furnishings for a tranquil ambience, and are all named after birds local to the area. The Kahu room – named after a protected bird – has a superb corner location giving it a double aspect view over the estuary and has a queen bed. The Kotare room – named after a bird with a brilliant green-blue colouring – offers views of the Papanui Inlet, and also has a queen bed, and a terrace with seating. Finally, the Korimako room – named after the Maori spirit bird – is the biggest room can sleep two adults and one child, and also has a separate seating area.

Activities

The city of Dunedin prides itself as a wildlife capital and extends a range of habitats, rock types and land formations which means there’s lots to explore. Highlights include the Sandfly Bay Wildlife Refuge created in 1908 for the chance to spot the yellow-eyed penguin; impressive views at Lovers Leap, a breathtaking 200m collapsed sea chasm; and the columnar basalt formation called The Pyramids on the back dunes of Victory Beach.

Dining

Food at the Kaimata Retreat reflects the fresh local ingredients available in this pristine region, and from the hotel’s kitchen garden which provides a variety of herbs, salads and mini vegetables. Menus change daily depending on what’s available, and guests can expect to enjoy lots of fresh seafood.
