from £354 per room night

Location

In an unspoilt setting, surrounded by lush rainforest, you’ll find Chaa Creek, an award-winning luxury resort that promises ‘comfortable adventure’ – something it’s been delivering for over 30 years. Sustainability is another key feature here, and 10% of all revenue is donated to charitable programs. The lodge is located in western Belize, south of San Iganacio, close to the Guatemalan border. If driving, take the Benque Viejo road out of San Igancio; alternatively, the lodge can arrange transfers from Belize International Airport (about 1.5 hours) in air-conditioned minivans for a fee – these are something of a guided tour in themselves, passing many feted landmarks.

Rooms

You can take your pick from 23 palm-thatched cottage rooms, from one-bedroom treetop and garden suites (with and without Jacuzzis) to an orchard villa, three-bedroom spa villa and, newest of all, the Macal Cottage colony. Amenities vary depending on your choice, but all are elegant and individually decorated, with features such as private outside spaces with hammocks, hand-crafted furniture, richly coloured fabrics, beautiful wooden floors, four-poster beds and wifi.

Activities

When you’ve relaxed into your heavenly new surroundings, perhaps having had a dip in the child- and eco-friendly freshwater pool, it’s time to take part in all manner of activities. There’s everything from horseriding and birdwatching to hiking, mountain-biking, canoeing and swimming available on site. There are also many exciting tours and trips, such as an excursion to a butterfly farm, Belize Zoo, a natural history museum or Mayan farm, a snorkelling or diving tour, a nature-watching trip round Vaca Lake on a pontoon, or a visit to San Ignacio market – there’s something to suit all ages and interests.

Dining

Jungle cuisine made from fresh local produce – much of it grown on site at the organic farm – is on offer at the Chaa Creek restaurant, an al fresco dining room alive with the sound of the surrounding forest. It’s open for breakfast, provides a ‘Back a Bush’ menu at lunch (pizza, pasta, quesadillas and other local favourites), and offers an exciting evening selection, including the chef’s four-course connoisseur menu. Drinks are available at the verandah bar, a great space for mulling over the delights of the day while indulging in a spot of star-gazing.

Spa

The ideal place to chill out after a day’s activity is the Hilltop Spa, a cool, calming space that sits high above the Macul River and provides awe-inspiring views of the nature below. You can enjoy an al fresco massage (‘the coma’ 90-minute massage is the ultimate) as well as a whole range of herbal-based treatments, all designed to cause minimal environmental damage. A mineral-rich mud treatment, for instance, or a seaweed body wrap might fit the bill.
