Location

Just 100m from the sparkling blue Caribbean sea, the colonial-style Great House is situated in the historical Fort George area of Belize, where it provides a shady and comfortable haven with lashings of traditional style and old-world charm. It’s the perfect base from which to explore the vibrant city, and enjoy the delights of the ocean, including the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, just 12 miles away.

Rooms

The elegant timber house was built by local craftsmen built in 1927 as a family home, and its spacious verandahs provide shady spots where cooling Caribbean breezes temper the tropical sun. The 16 charming rooms are decorated in cool hues of yellow and blue, and all open out onto a large veranda. Colonial-style features include cool polished wood floors, ceiling fans and attractive wooden furniture, but are equipped with all the necessary mod cons including remote control TV, air conditioning, wi-fi, coffee-makers, minoirefrigerators, direct dial phones, dedicated fax lines and in-room safes. The spacious bathrooms have hairdryers and colourful tiled walls.

Activities

Belize and its surrounding atolls and cayes offers lots of wonderful adventures, and the Great House has a long list of excursions and tours that it can arrange for you to make sure you get the most out of your stay. You could simply spend the day soaking up the tropical sun at the beach, 100m from the front door, or take a trip out to sea and explore the surrounding atols and cayes, and the spectacular barrier reef with its wonderful diving and snorkeling opportunities. There are also some wonderful cave systems, Maya ruins, valleys, waterfalls and rivers to explore on the mainland, as well as mangrove estuaries where you can spend the day watching gentle manatees and bottle-nosed dolphins.

Dining

The Smoky Mermaid offers international and Caribbean cuisine in a wonderful courtyard setting, located in the lower garden of the house. Sip a cocktail at sunset and dine on fresh seafood surrounded by featuring lush tropical fruit trees, and the soothing sounds of the Smoky Mermaid fountain. Sounds like heaven.
