Hog Hollow Country Lodge

Hog Hollow Country Lodge 4 Star

from £119 per room night

Location

Overlooking the spectacular Matjies River Gorge with views of the Tsitsikama Mountains, Hog Hollow is a modern-style safari lodge offering luxurious accommodation with a relaxed atmosphere and wonderful wildlife-watching opportunities.

Rooms

Hog Hollow’s 16 suites, all with double or twin beds, are located in the gardens surrounding the main house. There are three double storey rooms for families with up to two children. Each is decorated with handcrafted artifacts, and earthy tones with a bit of zingy accents. There’s a private wooden deck for you sit out in the sun or in the evening and enjoy a drink from your well stocked mini bar, accompanied by the sounds of birdlife or music from the hi-fi. There’s no TV, but then the view here is a lot better than anything you might see on the small screen. Other home comforts include hot water bottles for chillier nights, homemade syrup and handbaked cookies, which are stored in tightly sealed monkey-proof jars! There is also a three-bedroomVilla for rent, with a private infinity pool, and a comfortable lounge with leather furniture, a music system, DVD player, fireplace and a decked terrace with stunning views over the valley and the mountains.

Activities

Where to start? Well you could just lounge round the pool, but you could also try one of the 50 charted walks around the area, through the indigenous forest or the Monkeyland Primate Sactuary, or you could visit the Birds of Eden, the wildcats at Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre, or the Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary. Then there is Plettenberg Bay about 20km away, with a gorgeous golden sand beach, and boat-based whale and dolphin trips, and for the really adventurous, a tandem sky dive – or the completely mad, the highest bungy jump in the world… Plettenberg Bay also has great shopping for exciting souvenirs, fabrics, pottery and arts and crafts. Hollow Lodge also offers wonderful horse trails, from one-three hours, among wildlife in the private nature reserve, with wonderful views over the mountains.

Dining

Hollow Lodge offers fine fresh food in the convivial atmosphere of the main house, where everyone sits down around a big dining table, but if you prefer the privacy of your own room, that’s fine too. Start the day with a big farmhouse- style breakfast buffet served on the wooden deck, while dinner starts with appetisers out on the deck, followed by a full-on candlelit dinner with wine, round the big table.
