Our favourite place to eat

San Francisco has a healthy abundance of Mexican cantinas. Top of the tamale is Nopalito, a vibrant kitchen which offers authentic cuisine using organic, sustainable and locally sourced ingredients. Don’t miss the restaurant’s flavourful masa in the tortillas, and the carnitas are judged by most as the city's tastiest. It's a very casual and relaxed vibe, with plenty of tequila based cocktails to choose from. All that Mexican madness makes Nopalito popular. Book ahead.

Grandma’s cooking, fine dining style

2. Frances

Grandma’s cooking, fine dining style

It’s like a traditional dinner at home – if your house had a Michelin Star. Frances, with its inviting yellow light, warms the Castro District crowds with a homey, yet delicious menu. Named after the owner/ chef’s grandmother, it’s a family-run affair which has earned rave reviews and made booking ahead essential. The menu changes daily, just like at home, and serves up hearty and seasonal dishes - like bacon beignets, bavette steak and apple-filled lumberjack cake. Seconds, please!

Sushi, California style

3. Ichi Sushi

Sushi, California style

It may be a Pacific Ocean away from the home of sushi, but this minnow-sized Californian restaurant serves up raw fish as good as any in Japan. Its focus is serving inventive, super-fresh sashimi and specialty rolls —all of it made with a San Francisco focus. This sustainable, seasonal approach has made it into a buzzing, successful venue (with a second location on the way). There is also plenty of quality sake flowing, keeping the customers warm and happy.

On the hunt for the perfect burger?

4. Super Duper Burgers

On the hunt for the perfect burger?

We may have found it. Super Duper Burgers isn’t your average fast food joint; in fact, they prepare their food to old fashioned, slow food values. What that means is flavour-filled 100% Ranch beef in the patties, ground fresh every day. Milkshakes are created with local organic cream and pies and cookies are baked daily. There’s both a free range chicken breast sandwich and an organic Veggie burger on offer, and of course, all their packaging is compostable.

Restaurant which flies high

5. State Bird Provisions

Restaurant which flies high

Named America’s Best New Restaurant is high praise indeed for this unique and whimsical Californian eatery. The food on offer is marvellously inventive, with the kitchen behaving rather like an inventor’s workshop. Expect pancake with sturgeon, duck liver mousse with almond biscuits and, of course, the namesake fried state bird (that’d be quail). Be prepared for long queues, though. This restaurant is hugely popular. Our tip is to arrive at 5.30 and keep your party small.
