Don't miss these awesome cocktail bars. The hottest places to unwind after dark

The grand dame of San Francisco

1. The Starlight Room

The grand dame of San Francisco

Our all-time favourite bar

This elegant 1940s-style nightclub is one not to be missed! Consistently ranked by locals as the city’s best club, the Starlight also offers the grandest views of bustling Union Square. Located at the top of the historic Sir Francis Drake Hotel, the club is designed sublimely, with the drinks set at an even more sophisticated level. Renowned for its fine wines and champagnes, including many classic, vintage Dom’s, you can also savour sexy cocktails amongst the equally sexy crowd.

The weirdest-looking bar in the city

2. Noc Noc

The weirdest-looking bar in the city

One punter even referred to it as ‘walking into Tim Burton’s mind!’ Bombs hanging from the ceiling, table tops with keys embedded in them, walls moulded into outlandish shapes, it gets surreal in Noc Noc. The oldest bar in the Lower Haight, its decor remains true to the neighbourhood’s punk-rock roots. It’s very much a regular’s bar, with a friendly vibe, and a DJ playing from behind a pair of mounted eyes. There’s no Bud or Coors so you’ll need to sample a new beer!

Thar be pirates…

2. Smuggler's Cove

Thar be pirates…

The gold standard of Tiki bars, in fact, world renowned, this three-floor tropical wonderland is triple the fun. And, if you like rum, you’re in for the ultimate pirate’s treat, with over 200 varieties of the dark liquid on offer. They’ve used that cornucopia of alcohol to create an amazing cocktail list, with nods to desert islands, pre-Castro Cuba and thick green jungle. Punch bowls are hugely popular here and come with several-foot long straws and, if you’re lucky, a fire show!

Bar with a bridge view

4. The Slanted Door

Bar with a bridge view

One of the most famous and sought after bits of San Fran is its gorgeous bay and bridge view. How better to appreciate it than with a drink or two in your hands? At Slanted Door, you’ll do both, savouring classic and unique cocktails, a one-of-a kind-vista and, when the floor starts to feel a little slanted, some delicious Vietnamese food to get you back on your feet again! The bar is a sophisticated yet friendly spot and is very popular with the locals. Cheers!

Over a century in the making

5. Shotwells

Over a century in the making

No, that’s not the time it takes to make you a drink, but how long this icon has been open! Set in the down-to-earth Mission District, beer quaffers and history buffs will find plenty to admire at this classic 1891 saloon. It’s very easy going, with pool tables, pinball machines and a chilled-out vibe. Add a huge variety of beers, and plenty of old furniture and stories including the original wooden back bar, which still has bullet holes from a long-forgotten skirmish.
