5 hottest bars in Auckland

Don't miss these awesome cocktail bars. The hottest places to unwind after dark

Late nights need an easy vibe

1. Lime

Late nights need an easy vibe

Our all-time favourite bar

A long, narrow space for last-calls, Lime is refreshingly down to earth, playing all sorts of music from Springfield to Sinatra. It’s not the hippest place and doesn’t pretend to be, but it packs people in all the same. Its older crowd isn’t even embarrassed about singing along when things get raucous. Lime is almost always on the Best Bars list. Cocktails are the drink of choice; they’re well-made by staff who know what they are doing and there’s a decent range. Our only advice is to arrive early if you’d like a table.

Old Post Office delivers

2. Cartel

Old Post Office delivers

The best thing about Cartel is that it achieves its panache effortlessly. Think comfy sofas and silk-lined walls. The ambience is unpretentious but glamorous. Friendly bar tenders abound and can mix almost anything. Try the Smokin? Vanilla Sazerac, it's whiskey, smoked rum, bitters and vanilla sugar with a Benedictine rinse. Wow! You can even buy a bottle of spirits or wine and they?ll keep what you don?t finish till your return. The music is great and the crowd friendly. What more could you ask?

Sweets for your sweet

3. Honey

Sweets for your sweet

Well, actually, its full name is The Honey Champagne Cocktail Bar, and with 30 types of champagne and over 60 cocktails, we agree its name is well-earned. Décor is classical charm meets modern drinking den, with marble and oak bars, plenty of comfortable couches, and best of all, a real fire for when the nights get cold. Add old fashioned lamps and their flattering glow and you?ve got a great spot for a romantic rendezvous.

Heavenly cocktails on a rooftop

4. Breeze Bar

Heavenly cocktails on a rooftop

It may be hard to find but, once you embark up its marble staircase, you?ll agree the searching was well worth it. Breeze Bar is one of Auckland?s top rooftop bars in a city famous for them. They?ve got palm trees growing to give it a tropical vibe and around 60 cocktails on the menu. It?s really the perfect place for sundowners, not least because when it gets dark, there?s a nightclub just downstairs. Cheers to that!

Impossibly hip joint celebrates its spirit

5. The Whiskey

Impossibly hip joint celebrates its spirit

Impossibly hip joint celebrates its spirit Want whiskey and live music? You?ve come to the right place. Though the venue does offer a full range of drinks, it leans towards its namesake and there?s nothing wrong with that. Certainly, if you?re a whiskey enthusiast, you could spend a fortune sampling its single malt wares! Small, dark and cosy, with black and white photos of Sixties rock stars. And if you?re in the mood to learn, The Whiskey hosts its own cocktail college teaching its patrons the mixologist?s magic.
