The beauty of Bogota

La Candelaria is Bogota’s heart and soul, from its humble beginnings this is the oldest part of the city and the Plaza Bolivar is high on any visitor’s agenda and is the focal point of this historic area. Surrounding the square are several important Colonial and Republican style buildings including the Palace of Justice and Colombian Congress. The Plaza is also home to the Mayor’s office and the Primary Cathedral of Bogota.

As you wander the streets of La Candelaria away from the main square, your guide will not only explain the history of Bogota but also the intricacies of current Colombian culture and daily life. At the Gold Museum you can see one of the finest collections of Pre Hispanic gold in the world. The golden raft is one of the focal points of the display and was the driving force in the Spaniards quest to find El Dorado.

Golden Visions

The Gold Museum has one of the finest collections of Pre Hispanic gold in the world and is a “must see” when in Bogota. With more than 35,000 pieces of pre-Colombian gold work in the collection, many of the works are unsurpassed by goldsmiths of today. The magnificent golden raft is one of the focal points of the display and was the driving force in the Spaniards quest to find El Dorado.

A short drive or interesting walk from the centre of the old town takes you to the base of the hill that leads up to the view point and monastery of Monserrate. The summit can be reached by either funicular railway or cable car. From the highest point the view across the city will enable you to see the different areas of Bogota from La Candelaria with its terracotta tiled roofs to the high rise business sector and across the flat plains in the distance.

A pinch of salt

On this tour you leave Bogota to the north towards Zipaquira, travelling across the central region of the savanna, home to Colombia’s famous flower cultures as you can see from the greenhouses along the road. After an hour and 15 minute trip, visit the impressive Salt Cathedral, a magnificent work of engineering. The name Zipaquira evokes Zipa, chieftain of the Muiscas community and absolute master of the area’s rich salt mines.

The visit begins in a tunnel that exhibits the 14 stations of the Way of the Cross and leads to the dome where you can see the great cross sculpted in low relief. You finally arrive at the three naves of the cathedral joined by openings that represent the birth and death of Christ. The central nave houses the main altar, a 16 meter cross, and the Creation of Man, a marble statue. Then continue to Nemocon and visit the actual salt mines.
