Don't miss these awesome cocktail bars. The hottest places to unwind after dark.
The Blue Pub
Britain meets Brazil
Started as an English school, and then a place to practice English, this school-turned-pub has stayed close to its roots. The main upstairs bar has the feel of an old pub that’s been given a brush-up; while in the low-lit downstairs, things are cosier, with a classic bar offering a great variety of imported beers and Heineken, Newcastle Brown and Guinness on tap.

Upstairs downstairs speakeasy
Situated in Vila Madalena, Astor is a cheerful and bustling bar - casual yet classic, with a vintage air. The waiters all wear bow ties and the clientele, from the youngest to oldest, is modern and varied. The food is also excellent and very reasonably priced. However, if you just want drinks, head through Astor and straight down the stairs into SubAstor, a moody, low-lit basement cocktail bar decked out in seductive red and black, its walls lined with glinting vodka bottles.

Live Jazz, fine food and wine in Vila Madalena
One of the best live music bars in São Paulo, award-winning Bar Madeleine has jazz performances every night. Designed out of salvage materials, the bar has a moody, romantic atmosphere. Small candlelit tables are laid out in an underground wine cellar with exposed brick walls, and there is a lounge and mezzanine area by the stage, while the back veranda overlooks the bustling Rua Aspicuelta - central to nightlife in the Vila Madalena district.

Drink and dine in a microbrewery
No beer in São Paulo travels a shorter distance from barrel to glass than at this microbrewery and bar. Sit at the counter on the first floor overlooking the vast fermentation tanks below, or head up to the top-floor dining area for great food with friendly service and live music. Beer aficionados should try the degustação – a 150ml sampler of all five of the home brews, which include a lager, an India pale ale (IPA), a brown ale and a stout.

Hipster parties and happy hour
Armazém Piola is a warehouse bar located in Vila Madalena, but it wouldn’t look out of place in New York. Featuring exposed brick walls, rustic décor, low ceilings and a retractable roof, this is where the hot young things of São Paulo come to play. Head here for a delicious cocktail during happy hour in the early evening, or on a Sunday for its wild, roof-down parties. And if all that hedonism makes you hungry, Armazém Piola also serves decent, wood-fired pizza – Sao Paulo’s favourite fast food.
