1. Antiquarius

Fine Portuguese meets fine antiques

Our favourite place to eat

Taking its name from the antique furniture that provides the restaurant’s peaceful décor, Antiquarius is a traditional restaurant famed for taking Portuguese cuisine to the next level. One such specialty is Bacalhau a Lagareiro, a signature codfish recipe, which is impeccable. It’s also famed for attracting Brazilian celebs, international royalty and soon, you! The restaurant boasts an excellent wine list – and if you like Port, you’ll love this place.

2. Academia da Cachaca

Fillet steak and two Caipirinhas, por favour

What do you get when you cross two of Brazil’s favourite things? The Academia da Cachaca. Famed as a restaurant serving the finest cuts of beef, the academy is also peerless when it comes to the country’s cocktail of choice, Caipirinhas! Tuck into shredded beef with cassava cream purée and wash it down with the famed white rum sour made with crushed sugar and limes. And boy, do they know their stuff. This place has over 2,000 types of white rum!

Poor cows don’t stand a chance

3. Porcão

Poor cows don’t stand a chance

Well, to be fair, neither do chickens or pigs! This famous churrascaria (barbecue restaurant) is a carnivorous feast. A city of meat lovers (and its visitors) come every day and every night to gorge themselves on some of the finest beef on the planet – as well as take in some of the world’s best views. It's one price for all you can eat and waiters circle the room with grilled meat skewered on swords. Watch out, no doggy bags!

Romeo and Juliet dine out in Rio

4. Julieta de Serpa

Romeo and Juliet dine out in Rio

A 1910’s love story that features the most beautiful house in Rio is your backdrop to dining at the wondrous Casa de Arte e Cultura Julieta de Serpa. Know that the romantic story is beautifully married to the elegant cuisine on offer. It’s classic French but with distinctly Brazilian ingredients such as coconut-crusted grilled salmon with Sicilian lemon risotto. And with 200 wines on offer, you’ll light or re-light that romance of your own.

Fine-dining, real Brazil

5. Espirito Santa

Fine-dining, real Brazil

Piranha, para crabs and moquecas… You’ve come to a restaurant that not only serves up indigenous Brazilian dishes but does so in style. Situated in the atmospheric neighbourhood of Santa Teresa, the restaurant is just a tram line or a flight of stairs away. We recommend the Filet of Tilapia with heart of palm stuffing, baked and served in banana leaves, with cream of banana scented with Amazonian ginger. It doesn’t come more tasty or real.
