Calcutta flight - footsteps of the Raj

Take flights to Calcutta, or Kolkata as it is now known which started life as three small villages on the banks of the Hooghly River and ended up as the showpiece centre of the British Raj. The first capital of India, Calcutta is now the commercial hub of Bengal and a flight here today shows a sprawling metropolis, bustling, largely Victorian in appearance and still, a busy port. Despite its overcrowding (Mother Theresa was famous for helping the city’s poor) Calcutta has charm and culture to spare. The city is extremely rich in parks - choose between the Maidan, an enormous park twice the size of Hyde Park and a botanical garden which famously has a banyan tree with a circumference of 1200ft!
