5 hottest bars in Rome
Don't miss these awesome cocktail bars. The hottest places to unwind after dark.
Cul de Sac
The capital’s original wine bar
The Italians have always been fond of their vino. Which is why it’s odd that the city's first proper wine bar only opened in 1977. But since then, the tourist trap bars on the bustling squares have exploded. Fortunately for you, we’ve found one that doesn’t rip off the capital’s sight-seers. Its name is Cul de Sac, the afore-mentioned original wine bar, a place which hasn’t compromised its values or its prices. The wine selection is vast – and there’s no shortage of delicious accompaniments, from aged cheeses to cured meats.

Bar del Fico
A bar to give a fig for
Some say it is named after the ancient fig tree which has stood for years in the stunning piazza outside. Others say this bohemian bar takes its moniker from the alternative meaning of the Italian word, fico: "cool and trendy". Both agree that this neighbourhood bar is the real deal. Wizened old Romans sit hunched over chess boards. Local youngsters lend a stylish ambience. Wine and cocktails flow freely. There’s even an all-you-can-eat aperitivo buffet (free with a glass of wine or cocktail). Salute!

Pure class in a glass
Armani, Gucci, Ferragamo… Italy has style by the bucket load - and one of those places you’ll see its glory flaunted is this oh-so-chic bar in Rocco Forte's luxurious Hotel de Russie. It’s bubbly and cocktails all round, with everyone and lounging languidly in plush purple armchairs wearing designer shades. A haunt of wealthy business-types, glamorous models and movie starlets, the place is a real oasis – complete with a secret garden which is wonderfully green and leafy. A perfect tryst, perhaps?

Late night post-modernism
Looking for the hottest and the hippest? The avant-garde? The style-blazers? You’ll find it all at Anima, one of the best bar-food-clubs in the capital. Think drum 'n' bass DJ’s. Think sushi. Think beds and velvet cloth. Think cutting-edge cocktails. And chandeliers and golden murals. And everything which makes a place ultra-popular to those in the know. Best of all though is that entrance is free. And that fact is definitely lesser-spotted in Rome. Plus it parties till 4 am! Cin cin, darling!

Seduce – or be seduced
Sexy and sophisticated, ReRe is not a place in which to be shy. A sensual, over the top setting of blood red, animal print and gilded mirror surrounds you. Take a seat on one of the soft cushions or perch on an ottoman. Watch the romance unfold, with flickering candles all round. Order a cocktail – or three. Or better yet, tour the wine menu. Few places around rival its breadth. But you need breadth and depth for true decadence and ReRe delivers. Understated? Not on your life!
