Island Hopping Cruise

HOP OFF TO SEE THE ISLANDS

This relaxing island hopping excursion departs daily from Forodhani Garden for Prison Island, where you visit the old slave prison ruins and see the Aldabra’s giant tortoise, once owned by the Sultan Said Majid. Then there is time to play with starfish on the beach before setting sail again on a Swahili dhow to Pange Island, on the way enjoying a breakfast with ginger spiced tea, juices, home made bread and tropical fruit.

Isolated Pange Island is covered twice a day by high tide, and is an astonishing white sandbank surrounded by crystalline water, making it the ideal place to relax and go snorkelling to discover some of the treasures of the Indian Ocean. Later a buffet lunch is served on the sandbank featuring Swahili cuisine, Italian cheese, soft drinks and white wine. This island hopping cruise makes a memorable day out.

MONKEY BUSINESS

On this great nature tour you are picked up and taken to Jozani Forest, the largest conservation area in Zanzibar and the only remaining natural mangrove forest on the island. The Jozani Chwaka Bay Conservation Area is renowned for its hairy ape residents, the Red Columbus Monkey, and visitors to the island come from far and wide to see this highly endangered primate.

Owing to large-scale cultivation, firewood collection, harvesting building materials and charcoal and lime making, Zanzibar's forests have been largely depleted, making the Jozani Chwaka Bay conservation area a significant natural landscape. Nature lovers can walk through the 100 different towering tree species and marvel at the rich variety of birds and small animals that inhabit this cool woodland area.

TORTOISES ARE A BIG HIT

Prison Island is one of the nearest islands from Stone Town, just 20 minutes by boat. It is also known as Changuu Island. Birds abound and twitchers will find plenty of species to delight them. The island's original use was as a prison and later it was taken over to be used as a quarantine station by the British Army. Another prison was built but never used. Today the island is a great destination for a day trip.

It has some excellent coral formations just offshore where you can go snorkelling. Another main attraction is the giant tortoises which are more than 100 years old. These tortoises are only found on this island and are not indigenous to continental Africa, having been brought here from the Seychelles. Some of the tortoises at Prison Island were rescued from poachers and on this tour you will get to meet them.
