Your Colombian Checklist

As we continue our week dedicated to Colombia, here is little checklist for you to sink your teeth into. After all, it's always nice to have a little advice to take away with you on holiday.

Adventure San Gil

San Gil is, first-and-foremost, an absolute must for the adrenaline junkies of you out there. Widely recognised as the hub of adventure sport, this place of stunning natural beauty and incredible rock formations throws up a real treat if you want to find a new way to get the heart beating and the adrenaline rushing.

Try your hand at rafting on the level 4 Suarez River; rappel under an 80m waterfall; paraglide over breathtaking canyons or seek adventure on a caving excursion. Whatever it is that takes your fancy, you'll be sure to leave on a high, but glad to have your feet back on the ground.

San Agustin Archaeological Park

A UNESCO Heritage Site, this awe-inspiring location is more than just a backdrop of pristine natural beauty, as it is the permanent residence of some remarkable sculptures representing northern Andean culture, stretching as far back as first as the 1st century.

Despite the threat of theft, erosion and even earthquakes, the authenticity and the integrity of the sacred site remains mostly unquestioned as is the entire area, with four separate sites (including burial grounds) being protected. This is a perfect chance to catch a glimpse of history and see the marvellous pieces of work that have lasted the ages.

Coffee Culture

They may say "there's an awful lot of coffee in Brazil", but there's some awfully good coffee to be discovered in Colombia, that's for sure. Head to the intriguing Salamina and it's surrounding areas to discover the culture of coffee and farms in this country. Here, you'll learn how the locals have been cultivating, threshing and roasting the beans for generations, all of which are harvested manually by hand.

Some farms may even teach you how to make coffee from their lands, forming the Arabica variety.

Discover the Lost City

Find the Lost City (or Ciudad Perdida) for a mysterious afternoon exploring the archaeological site of an ancient city, believed to be even older than Machu Picchu. "Found" in 1972 by treasure looters, the city sits at the top of a series of stone steps climbing up the mountainside in Sierra Nevada. The city is believed to have been the heart of a network of villages in the past, but has still been newsworthy recently with figurines from the site appearing on the black market and more recently, being the site of Colombian armed conflict.

Now protected and completely safe, this wondrous location may leave you scratching your head.
