Trip Advisor in trouble again over fake reviews
Already under fire for publishing fake reviews and allowing hoteliers to manipulate their ratings Trip Advisor has been caught out again in a fake restaurant sting.
A reputation management company decided to test Trip Advisor’s screening as the company claims it has highly sophisticated fraud-detection systems.
They managed to propel a restaurant which is not even open to 17th best in London by submitting three fake reviews on the same day.
The restaurant, called For the Love of Life at Tony’s was a pop up restaurant that appeared briefly in Wandsworth last summer. After just nine reviews published over two weeks, it was ranked by TripAdvisor as the 11th best in the Capital, out of nearly 10,000 restaurants. Seven months later - long since closed - it had fallen to 76th.
Three fake reviews of the restaurant were then submitted on February 17, two of which were identical! Just over a month later, the reviews were still on the site and the restaurant had risen to 17th best in London.
