Need a little inspiration for your holidays this year? We’ve handpicked some of the best destinations to visit in 2015, each with a fresh reason to visit – from favourable exchange rates to new flight routes and hotly-anticipated hotels.
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last month, you’ll no doubt have heard that America is set to normalise diplomatic relations with Cuba – this will likely have a big impact on the Caribbean island and change is sure to follow. Our advice is to visit Cuba soon to enjoy its unique old-world charms. The island has existed in a time warp since 1959 when Fidel Castro staged a communist coup – visit now and you’ll find little trace of modern commerce, no neon lights and old classic cars cruising the colourful streets.
The best trips to Cuba involve a combination of city and coast: we’d suggest a few days in the vibrant city of Havana, followed by the idyllic Cayos islands or the beautiful beaches of Varadero.
Now is a great time to explore South Africa with the extremely favourable exchange rate for the British Pound. This means the country is more affordable than it has been for many years. The ‘Mother City’ of Cape Town makes a fantastic base with the iconic sight of Table Mountain, the pretty Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and a plethora of bars and restaurants. Travel further afield and be wowed by Kruger National Park with its unrivalled array of wildlife (visitors are almost guaranteed to spot the Big Five) as well as excellent luxury lodges and safari camps. A trip to this fine country wouldn’t be complete without a road trip to the vineyards of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek - dozens of places offer the chance to sample local vintages.
We’d suggest visiting in the country’s shoulder seasons (March to May, September and October) for the best combination of low crowds and pleasant weather. And, with just a two-hour time difference from the UK, you can wave goodbye to jet lag. Book an overnight flight and you’ll wake up under African skies.
British Virgin Islands
The breathtaking British Virgin Islands is an archipelago of 60 islands situated close to Puerto Rico. These Caribbean islands are now more accessible than ever due to a new connecting flight between London and Antiqua eliminating the need for overnight stays en-route. Once a haven for smugglers and pirates, the islands remain untouched by mass tourism, the BVI’s are a wonderful retreat if you’re looking for unspoilt landscapes and secluded bays, miles of sandy beaches, abundant reefs and glorious sunsets to savour, cocktail in hand.
Russia is another country where your pound will go further if you travel soon. Travellers will get around 50 per cent more roubles to the pound than they would have done a year ago.
Moscow is one of the world’s most vibrant cities and its buzzing atmosphere is infectious, and is home to many well-known sights including Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s tomb and St Basil's Cathedral. A visit to Moscow wouldn’t be complete without an evening out to the ballet or opera - the Bolshoi Theatre has been holding performances for over 250 years!
We’ll let you into a little secret, the Russian city of St Petersburg rivals Venice and Paris as one of the world’s most romantic cities. It’s brimming with canals, colourful grand palaces, galleries and theatres and be sure not to miss the majestic Winter Palace and Hermitage Museum.
Set to open this spring, the mega-resort of Baha Mar in The Bahamas is nestled on half a mile of the pristine Cable Beach in Nassau. The eagerly-anticipated five-hotel resort boldly claims it will change the Bahamas tourism landscape and with a whopping 2,200 hotel rooms (including a huge 1,000-room casino hotel promising Las Vegas-style experience), a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, an ESPA spa plus 40 restaurants, bars and clubs, this could well be true. Nicknamed the ‘Bahamian Riviera’, the luxury resort offers something for everyone and should intrigue and excite even the most hard-to-please travellers.
