We've already explored some of the region's most famous tourist hotspots, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't be on the look out for more. This applies especially to the Tomb of the Unknown Solider which commemorates American service members who have died without their remains being identified. Incredibly moving is the changing of the guard at the monument, a real eye-opener and an absolute must.
For another authentic American experience, head to Charlottesville to see the home of Thomas Jefferson: The Monticello, a spectacular example of architecture surrounded by a flurry of remarkable greenery. Take the tour and learn about the private side of one of the founding fathers. With a constant stream of classes, talks and events, it's worth checking before your visit to pick the best time to go!
This is where the Capital Region comes into it's own, with plenty on offer for everyone. Virginia Beach should be first on your list and could demand a holiday in itself with so much going on. A choice from three beaches is your first conundrum, but is only followed by choice of water sports, shops, adventure excursions and night-time entertainment. Neptune's Park is particularly noteworthy as both a picturesque location during the day and a hub of entertainment in the evening.
Elsewhere, Virginia Safari Park is great for a wholly entertaining nature experience and a chance to get up close and personal with some of the wildlife. Or, for an American take on a true British classic, the American Shakespeare Centre is a great place to take in an alternative production executed professionally.
For sports fans, Oriole Park is a truly excellent sporting venue and a great place to take in a baseball game in a true ballpark atmosphere. Alternatively, a trip to the M&T Bank Stadium to cheer on the Super Bowl XLVII Champions: Baltimore Ravens in an unforgettable experience for any real sports fan.
Combining a strong combination of magic, comedy and cocktails is the aptly-named Illusions Bar and Theatre, a local favourite and classy establishment with a constant run of weekend shows on offer. Equally as alternative (though for vastly different reasons) is Fager's Island Bar located in Ocean City. The prime relaxation point, you can sip a refreshing drink, watching the sunset, listening to music choreographed especially for the situation. All against the beautiful backdrop of the waterfront.
Fancy something a little more involved? No problem! Just head to the delightfully named Mustang Alleys and spend an evening bowling in this rather swanky location. Bowling has never been so enjoyable and you can even try your hand at the duckpin version (shorter, fatter pins and smaller ball). You can also choose to be scared senseless by embarking on an Annapolis Tour, including the spooky Walking Ghost Tour with plenty of terrifying tales to keep you on your toes for the evening.
All of this, and more, await you in the Capital Region, the real question is how you choose to fit it all in!
