You can hardly reflect the true diversity that lies within the Capital Region through exploring it's history alone, albeit being a good place to start. Be sure to venture further though, as tucked away in the paths-less-travelled lie a number of cultural, lively and tasty pit stops for you to enjoy.
First stop, a spot of music to set the tone and where else to start, but at the Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts (above) of course! With free performances daily at 6pm, on top of other shows, there's a good chance there'll be something for you. If you think movement and sound is overrated though, the array of studio galleries a mere stroll away will certainly capture your attention. The Fridge, Hemphill and The Phillips Collection all do a stellar job of capturing the imagination.
The Fridge works as an excellent, versatile gallery space
Hungry for more? Well, the foodies among you will be happy to hear that there are plenty of places to explore the local culinary delights in DC. If money is no object, then you'll want to head to Fiola, a spectacular Italian restaurant where pasta is king (and you'll be eating like one) or, for a similar price, stay local with the food and head to Komi for an American and Mediterranean mash-up.
Cheaper eats can be found at the Birch & Barley, where you'll sample some rustic dishes, elegantly presented with a fine choice of beers too. For less boozing and more schmoozing though, Bourbon Steak provides you with an excellent celebrity-spotting opportunity with a price tag smaller than you would imagine. The aged porterhouse is a local favourite, but make sure you don't fill up on the complimentary fries, they're hard to resist!
To go in the opposite direction, you can also have unique dining experiences at Rose's Luxury and at Minibar. The former experiments with a mishmash of flavours and cooking styles, whereas the latter will serve you up unique food creations that will blow your mind.
Ben's Chili Bowl is a popular choice for hungry locals on U street corridor
Once you've recovered from your inevitable food belly, you'll be ready to hit the town and U street corridor is the place to go. For a few leisurely drinks accompanied by some ambience, the live music on offer at the 9:30 club will happily accommodate you, though you may have to call ahead. DC9 will offer you a different vibe as a trendy rooftop bar perfect for groups and conversationalists to mingle, be merry and to discuss the fantastic view. Feeling energetic? Echostage could be the perfect way to round off the evening with a dance as it plays host to a constant stream of DJ events to let you let your hair down.
If all that dancing has worked up more of an appetite, Ben's Chili Bowl will cook you up a tasty treat full of history and love.
So you see, it's not just a sightseer's dream, there's plenty to keep idle thumbs away from their camera phones!
