The best American beach has been named in the annual list compiled by a top US beach expert, and may come as a surprise to many expecting Florida or Hawaii to take the top spot...
New York State has claimed the top spot in the beach list by Dr Stephen Leatherman, aka 'Dr Beach', with Main Beach in East Hampton coming out on top of the list of outstanding sands. The Hamptons have long been loved by the rich and famous, and Main Beach was described as being simply "idyllic" by the environmental scientist, who uses a large number of criteria to judge US beaches each year.
"This beach was heavily eroded by Super Storm Sandy and subsequent winter storms, yet it has largely recovered," said Dr Leatherman, who includes sand quality, water quality, visitor safety and environmental management among his assessment criteria. "A great team of lifeguards stands watch, making this a very safe beach for bathing and swimming," added the scientist.
Second place in the list was Kahanamoku Beach Waikiki in Hawaii, and beaches around the island also claimed fourth and fifth places in the rankings. Florida claimed third place, with the St George Island State Park Florida panhandle being deemed the Sunshine State's best stretch of coastline.
North Carolina made it into the list, with Cape Hatteras getting a mention at number eight, and South Carolina's Beachwalker Park Kiawah Island was given tenth place in the list. Massachusetts was the only other state to win a mention, with the Coast Guard Beach at Cape Cod falling to ninth place.
