St Lucia: The affordable Caribbean getaway

The Caribbean has long been viewed as a destination of great luxury, and for travellers from the UK, great expense. However, there are more affordable gems to be discovered, and of those gems, St Lucia shines brightest.

This idyllic island, with beautiful beaches, dense forests and a rugged mountainous interior provides all of the ingredients for a truly memorable Caribbean holiday.

There is no shortage of exciting activities on offer on St Lucia, and while the beaches are exceptional, it would be a shame to treat St Lucia exclusively as a beach holiday destination, and miss out on the islands many other assets.

Those with a head for heights shouldn’t miss the hike to the top of the distinctive Gros Piton, one of two cone-shaped mountains rising from the edge of the ocean to one of the highest points on the island. The hike is a strenuous day’s activity, but the views from the top make it all worthwhile.

Other exciting activities include a day-sail around the island on the brig Unicorn, a ship that featured in the movie Pirates of The Caribbean, exploring many of the island backdrops used in the film.

For those feeling even more adventurous, a hot dip in the sulphur pools at La Soufrière, dubbed “the world’s only drive-in volcano”. Or if you don’t feel so brave, you can of course stick to the beautiful white, sandy beaches, of which there are plenty.

St Lucia really does have something for everyone, and those with a nose for a bargain can sniff out some great deals that put other Caribbean islands firmly in the shade.
