Only a couple of months ago if most of us were asked if we knew what k-pop was the answer would most probably be no, this is no longer the case. The Gangnam Style song has propelled the unusual music genre to global stardom and Seoul’s tourist board would be mad not to take notice!
Last week a promotional clip was released by the Seoul Tourism Organisation showing off the affluent area of Gangnam in South Korea using Psy’s global hit song as the soundtrack to the video. The clip titled “What is Gangnam Style?” already has over 300,000 hits and is certain to attract more attention and boost the number of tourist flights to South Korea.
The Gangnam district is well known in Seoul as one of richest areas in not only the city, but also the country, and is the 4th most populated district in Seoul. It’s only in the last 30 years that Gangnam has been developed and has now earned a reputation as being the most dynamic, affluent and influential area in South Korea.
Though a very rich area there are not many attractions in Gangnam and most people that visit usually visit for business purposes or shopping. The tourism organisation is hoping for a surge of visitors to the previously unvisited part of Seoul which in turn will hopefully lead to more tourist attractions being built. The song itself has been viewed more than 880 million times and is the most video on YouTube of all time. It also holds the Guinness world record for the most liked song with a staggering five million plus likes!
