Right as Rain: Wonderfully Wet Travel Photos

When we think of holidays most of think of blue skies and blazing sunshine as being an essential part of the experience... however for photographers of all abilities, the appearance of those dark, looming clouds signals an opportunity to create some dramatic and beautiful travel pictures!

This post is all about appreciating the beauty of our surroundings, whatever the weather. At least on holiday you don't usually have to get anywhere or do anything important, so why not relish the experience of soaking up a few droplets and get the camera out! You never know what you might find...

Drop in the Ocean

Rain

Droplets acts as mini-lenses, creating fascinatingly distorted images from the forms and colours around them. These glistening drops add life and freshness to any scene!

On Reflection

 Rain
Every photographer knows to look out for interesting reflections, and a good rain shower really opens up the possibilities. The floor becomes a mirror, allowing us to peer down into the world 'above ground'!

Although difficult to capture, the striking form and delicate colours of a rainbow add drama to any landscape. With light conditions often changing rapidly, time is of the essence to capture a rainbow at its best.

Storms Ahead

For the ultimate in dramatic landscape photography, try capturing one of nature's most spectacular displays. Lightning can be captured using either a specialist light-trigger to trip the shutter at the right moment, or simply by setting long exposure and wide aperture. For really dramatic shots, keep the camera in the same place for multiple flashes and layer them up afterwards!

On Cloud Nine

Rain is a small price to pay for a great cloudscape, and the range of tones and colours produced by dark clouds is a great photo opportunity. If this moody picture of Sydney Harbour doesn't make you want to grab some flights to Australia, even during their winter, I don't know what will!

After the Rain

Rain 17

There's something truly magical about the light and atmosphere left after a rainstorm. The reflections, the light, the sense of 'calm after the storm' and the cloud-culprits departing into the distance - all combine to produce powerful images.

Last but not least - wellies! Everyone loves splashing about in a pair, and colourful examples can often bring interest into portrait shots. Umbrellas also provide a great chance to create some colourful images.
