Airlines and travel agents are hoping the new movie adaptation of the bestselling book Life of Pi will entice a new crowd of visitors to India.
Jet Airways has invited fans of the movie to book cheap flights to India on one of their services, in order to appreciate first-hand the natural beauty and rich culture of the country. The movie, which is an adaptation of the Man Booker Prize-winning novel by Yann Martel, depicts the story of Pi Patel. Patel is the son of a zookeeper who survives a disaster at sea, then finds himself launched onto the adventure of a lifetime. One of Patel's castaway companions is a huge Bengal tiger, with which he forms a close connection. India is the setting for the opening scenes of the movie, and locations include Pondicherry and Kerala. Tourists can explore the same bustling markets and temples shown in the film, and the director of the movie, Ang Lee, has said that the way India is portrayed in the story should encourage visitors to pay the country a visit. Lee commented that the novel contains "inherent material that romances and idealises India in a very specific way." Life of Pi will be released in the UK on 20th December. The book was adapted for the screen by David Magee and stars Suraj Sharma as Pi Patel and Rafe Spall as the writer of the tale. French acting legend Gerard Depardieu also stars in the movie as a cook.Image sources:1 2
