Justin Bieber is the latest celebrity to book a trip to space with Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic commercial space flight company.
Branson spilled the news via his Twitter account that Bieber and his manager Scooter Braun had paid the $250,000 deposit to join the waiting list of aspiring space-tourists. "Great to hear @justinbieber & @scooterbraun are latest @virgingalactic future astronauts. Congrats, see you up there!" tweeted the British billionaire. Bieber replied on Twitter suggesting that they "shoot a music video in SPACE!!"
Bieber joins a number of celebrities who have signed up for Virgin Galactic flights, including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Tom Hanks, Ashton Kutcher and Leonardo DiCaprio. Virgin Galactic is currently testing their latest SpaceShipTwo craft, which is capable of carrying six passengers up to 68 miles above the earth's surface, allowing them to experience weightlessness. Richard Branson and his family are due to be the first passengers on the schedulaed service, which will begin later in 2013.
Along with the celebrities mentioned above, over 530 budding astronauts have also signed up for the space flights, providing much-needed capital for the ambitious project. Virgin Galactic has also recently hired two pilots to join its commercial flight team.
Potential space passengers wanting reassurance that their lives are in capable hands would be happy to learn that the two pilots selected have 56 years flying experience between them, both with the US military and also NASA space shuttle missions. One of the pilots, Frederick Sturckow, has spent more than 1,200 hours in space, and even attended the US Navy's legendary 'TOPGUN' training school!
