Geneva voted most romantic Valentine’s Day destination

Geneva has been revealed as the most popular romantic getaway destination for Valentine’s Day. A survey conducted by Gatwick Airport saw the Swiss city come out on top with the most bookings for Valentine’s Day. The city narrowly beat Amsterdam and Edinburgh to the top spot, with the two cities coming in second and third. Surprisingly, traditional romantic destinations such as Paris, Venice and Rome failed to make it into the top ten, losing out to other cities around the world. The Spanish city of Barcelona came in fourth followed by Grenoble, Dubai, Belfast, Dublin, Tenerife and Bridgetown. Terminals operations chief at Gatwick Airport Nick Henderson commented on the list saying ‘as usual, European mini break destinations are proving popular but it's interesting to see less traditional cities, like Belfast, hitting the spot for Valentine's breaks this year.’ Couples arriving in Geneva will be able to enjoy the city’s many heritage sites. Packed with museums, cathedrals and historical buildings, the French-speaking Swiss city is bound to impress its Valentine’s Day visitors. Geneva is the second most populous city in Switzerland and the most populous city of Romandy. Often referred to as the “Peace Capital” the Swiss city is not only ranked in the top ten most romantic destinations, in 2011, Geneva was ranked the fifth most expensive city in the world. This Valentines week is expected to be Gatwick Airport's busiest yet, with around 476,000 passengers scheduled to pass through the airport this week. Image sources: 1 2 3
