Rabbit Beach in Italy has been voted the best on earth in a recent travellers’ poll. The beach, situated on the Italian island of Lampedusa, beat dozens of beaches from across the world to get to the top spot.
The beach came out on top in the first annual best beach awards based on millions of reviews and ratings by tourists from all over the world on TripAdvisor. "Rabbit Beach is clearly a big hit with travellers and it's easy to see why with its stunning turquoise water and white sand," said Emma Shaw, spokeswoman for TripAdvisor.
Other beaches that made it onto the top ten were Grace Bay, Turk and Caicos, in second, Whitehaven Beach, Australia, in third and Baia do Sancho, Brazil, in fourth. Beaches in Aruba, Bermuda, Spain and Puerto Rico also made it onto the list.
Surprisingly, Rhossili Bay in Wales managed to creep its way onto the list, coming in tenth in the world. Speaking of Wales’ position on the list David Philips, leader of the City and County of Swansea stated "we are delighted, but not surprised, that Rhossili Bay has been acknowledged ... We hope that many more visitors continue to enjoy its outstanding natural beauty.”
The awards were based on the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings over a 12-month period according to a TripAdvisor spokesperson. “Travellers that have visited these beaches have given them the highest levels of praise,' said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer at TripAdvisor. She went on to say that the list was useful “'for those planning their summer vacations, spring break trips, or just looking for a weekend escape from the winter doldrums.”
