British Airways has seen a 130 per cent rise in Caribbean holidays, including destinations such as Barbados and St Lucia. It is believed that the sudden interest has arisen after an increase in the number of celebrities posting their Caribbean holiday snaps online.
Last year Barbados saw a number of A-list visitors with Simon Cowell, Coleen Rooney, Olly Murs and the face of Barbados tourism, Rihanna, all posting pictures of themselves holidaying on the tropical island . In St Lucia, notoriously camera shy Gwyneth Paltrow uploaded holiday snaps of her and her family enjoying the beaches on the island, and Kim Kardashian and Kanye West also posted pictures of their trip to St Lucia earlier in 2012.
Other destinations that the airline has seen an increase of interest in include Hawaii, which was up by 100 per cent, possibly due to high profile visitors such as Katy Perry, John Mayer, Steven Tyler, Jude Law and Barak Obama choosing the island as their holiday location. Dubai and Australia also proved popular last year, with up and coming pop princess Rita Ora posting pictures of herself in Dubai, and Kylie Minogue and Nicole Kidman enjoying New Years Eve celebrations in Australia.
Managing director of British Airways Holiday, Claire Bentley, said that, “the start of the year is always the busiest time for bookings - people are back at work and need something to look forward to. The wet weather over Christmas, combined with lots of enticing pictures of celebrities on holiday has clearly influenced the rise we're seeing in beach holidays."
