Family Friendly D.C.

Washington D.C. and the Capital Region as a whole are well known to avid travellers as a great area for sightseeing, history and a great place to grab a good bite to eat. What isn't always common knowledge though, is how popular the area can be with the kids as plenty of family friendly events and activities are on at any one time. So today, with half term not too far away, we're bringing you some of our favourite family treats in Washington, D.C.!

Get into the spirit of Halloween, one of America's favourite holidays, this October with the exciting 'Boo at the Zoo' weekend at the National Zoo. A not-so-scary event, kids will love the plethora of activities and attractions laid out before them, all whilst they're dressed as their favourite monsters. Over 40 treat stations await, as well as animal demonstrations ready and waiting to teach the little ones about all the animals on show. These include talks with Great Cat keepers; an insight into feeding time with the sloths and a chance to discovery how animals use their senses to solve problems.

Show your family's creative side by entering the pumpkin decorating competition or simply take in the phenomenal atmosphere at the new entertainment stage featuring musicians, jugglers and spooky songs provided by a DJ. A themed hay maze and an eerie scarecrow field also await, once you've sampled some of the traditional treats on offer.

Go undercover with a thrilling trip to the Spy Museum and discover the mysterious world of espionage and intelligence. Kids and teens will love following the stories of real-life agents, their backgrounds, the missions they were tasked with and how they completed them. The exhibition includes details on the intense training of spies and an eye-opening look into code-breaking and it's importance to shortening the war.

A popular addition to the exhibition has been the 'Exquisitely Evil' section, which pays homage to 50 years of Bond villains and is included with general admission. Meet the masterminds and the henchmen that James Bond had to overcome, uncover their evil schemes and explore their outrageous lairs in this special collaboration with EON Productions which includes over 100 artefacts from the films.

For a taste of history and a genuine bit of family fun, we recommend a visit to the National Mall were a number of free tours are held. Gratuity is recommended for these tours, but DC by Foot's guides do incredible work at including and engaging kids on the tours with fun facts and games scattered throughout, especially for the Ghosts of Georgetown Tour.

For a look beyond the National Mall and greater independence, Cultural Tourism DC provides free self-guided walking tours, telling the historic stories behind some of the local neighbourhoods. Whilst in the area, take to the water for a delightful paddle boat ride (weather permitting) and let the little ones transport you around in fascinating surroundings - a stunning combination of towering landmarks and gorgeous greenery.
