Don't Miss Out on Bogota!

Our week of Colombia coverage is in full swing with this short working week drawing to a close. Therefore what better time to underline the heartbeat of the country and it's capital city. We bring you Bogota and just some of the many reasons why it's not to be overlooked on a Colombia getaway.

candelaria

A large and vibrant city, Bogota is a city with a fantastic heritage attached to it, as underlined by the region of La Candelaria, where colonial buildings crowd around the cobbled streets of downtown. Here you'll find all the culture you can handle, as an array of fantastic bars, restaurants, museums and churches continue to call these snug traditional structures home, which only adds to their appeal.

After wandering the winding roads of downtown, stop off and grab a bite to eat and refuel. Order a Fritanga if a fried treat consisting of pork, potato and chorizo. Or, for a more 'afternoon tea' experience, embrace the Spanish heritage and order cheese with a chocolate melting pot for a culinary treat.

gold museum

For a bit of culture and for something that will most certainly catch the eye, the Gold Museum is Bogota's most famous museum and one of the most fascinating in all of South America. Containing more than 55,000 pieces of gold and other materials from all the major pre-Hispanic cultures in Colombia, you'll be able to learn how the pre-hispanic inhabitants of this fine country used these metals in everyday life.

monserrate

You can't be in Bogota and not notice the imposing figure of Mount Monserrate, a towering hill overlooking this fair city. Head to the summit to get a feel of how incredible this natural podium is, before choosing to reach the peak by foot or by cablecar, both offering their own unique views. At the top, you'll find the incredible monastery built by Don Pedro Solis and home to it's most famous guest: the Fallen Lord of Moserrate, a remarkable piece of impressionist art and a strong symbol of the religious unity now found locally.

graffiti

Finally, for a unique way to see the city, consider taking a Graffiti Tour and discover why this city is so well renowned for it's collection of street art scattered around the sidestreets. Without any knowledge on the city itself or of graffiti, you can still appreciate the works on offer and some of the motives behind their creation to obtain a better grasp of the local ideologies and beliefs. Of course, this is also an excellent way to familiarise yourself with the city itself and to bookmark some points of interest to visit yourself later.

Experience Bogota for yourself with a deluxe stay at the 5* Sofitel Victoria Regia Hotel.
