More Brits are flying to Barcelona than any other destination for Easter this year, according to Gatwick Airport. Barcelona has come out as the top destination with Brits this Easter, as people look to escape the cold winter in the UK.
Barcelona wasn't the only Spanish destination making it onto the popular holiday destinations list though, with Malaga also landing in the top three. Research from Skyscanner has also revealed that Spain is the most popular destination for Brits this year, despite sterling hitting a 16 month low against the euro.
“We offer flights to more destinations than any other UK airport so people looking to take off this Easter are spoilt for choice,” said Nick Henderson, terminal operations, Gatwick Airport. “Whilst the ski season is still in full flow and we’re seeing the usual surge for Geneva, given the recent bout of cold weather it’s perhaps to be expected that Brits want to leave their scarves and gloves at home to enjoy some sun this Easter.”
More than 1.6 million people are expected to pass through Gatwick Airport over the Easter weekend – the busiest Easter period on record. Temperatures in Spain are currently at an enticing 19 degrees, tempting UK travellers with the promise of a much needed escape from the cold snap in Britain.
Orlando, Tenerife and Faro have all also proved popular with Brits this year, making their way onto the top ten most popular Easter destinations list. Dublin Amsterdam and Belfast made up the rest of the list.
