This Saturday brings with it the drama and excitement that only comes with the greatest racing event in the UK: The Grand National. Now in it's 168th year, it has us thinking about another famous race course across the pond...
The Preakness Stakes is itself approaching it's 140th Anniversary and remains one of the most prestigious races in both America and the world. Hosted, at the historic Pimlico Race Course, The Preakness Stakes is held on the third Saturday of May every year, which almost guarantees superb weather for both the horses and the spectators.
The race is the second leg in American thoroughbred racing's triple crown and, as such, regularly features winners of the Kentucky Derby which gives the race an even greater pedigree. Moreover, the tradition of the event is something that is overt throughout. No more so than when a replica horse on top of the clubhouse weather vane is painted in the victor's colours.
Situated in Baltimore, Maryland, the Pimlico Race Course itself is steeped in history, having opened in 1870. Before each Preakness Stakes, for example, spectators are encouraged to sing the state anthem "Maryland, My Maryland", a rendition which is now led by the US Naval Academy Glee Club.
Be sure to look out for concert nights at the course, to combine an afternoon of racing with an evening of live music, often with a great headline artist, though sometimes with the latest up-and-coming talent.
Whether it be for The Preakness Stakes, a regular race day or a live concert, the Pimlico Race Course is definitely worth a visit whilst in the Capital Region. Great for an evening of family fun, or for a night out with the mates, we're sure that you'll enjoy your visit to one of the finest race courses around (even if we can't guarantee it will be profitable!).
