Funtasy Island, a new development located just 16 kilometres south of Singapore, is set to open next year. The development, in Indonesia’s Riau Islands, will boast the world’s largest eco theme park and will be home to the first ever gated island community in the world.
Hotel chain Meritus Hotels & Resorts signed a development agreement with Funtasy Island Development earlier this week, confirming the company's plans to build a deluxe resort on the island. The resort will be made up of a 230-room hotel, 413 unit villas, 200 condos and 810 acres of tropical island land.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Funtasy Island Development in bringing this one-of-a-kind resort development into the international limelight,” said Chua Tian Chu, deputy chief executive officer of Meritus. “Adding into the equation our signature brand of Asian hospitality and over 40 years of proven hotel management expertise, we are uniquely positioned to drive the product and service offerings of Funtasy Island’s hotel and villas.”
The island, which is roughly around two thirds the size of Sentosa Island in Singapore, will also feature the world’s largest eco theme park. 70 per cent of the development's total area will be preserved as a nature sanctuary, keeping the island bursting with beautiful flowers and wildlife. Eco-themed activities on the island will include aquaculture tours in the island's surrounding crystal clear waters and nature hikes in Funtasy Island’s untouched environment.
Funtasy Island will be accessible from Singapore’s Harbourfront ferry terminal via a 20-minute luxury yacht trip. The official opening of the new destination will take place at the end of this month, around a year before the island is set to be ready for the public.
