AirAsia wins “Low Cost Airline of the Year”

AirAsia has been named the “2013 Low Cost Airline of the Year” at the Air Transport News Awards ceremony in Montreal, Canada. The low-cost airline has become the first carrier to win the award, which is new to 2013.

The Air Transport News Awards was held last week for the second consecutive year and has established itself a good reputation among leading airlines, companies and personalities in the aviation industry as a respected awards ceremony. The “Low Cost Airline of the Year Award” was new to 2013, honouring airlines that provide good services to passengers at budget prices. AirAsia has become the first airline to win the award, providing budget flights to Asia from Japan, Australia and Saudi Arabia.

"It is simply amazing to think that 11 years ago we only had two old planes in operation, and now we are operating 120 planes in five countries and continue to be the most profitable airline, despite volatile economic conditions,” said Sir Tony Fernandes, chief executive officer of AirAisa group, in a statement.

Fernandes went on to say that AirAsia was “deeply Flattered” by the award and that receiving it was “truly a great start to 2013.”

AirAsia is a Malaysian-based company that currently flies to 400 destinations in 25 countries.  Established in 1993, the airline has quickly become one of the biggest budget airlines in South-East Asia.

AirAsia has recently won a bid to introduce a new low-cost carrier to India. The move will see the airline, along with Tata Group, become the first foreign company to attempt to capture the rising demands in India’s’ airline and aviation sector.
