As autumn approaches most of us begin to flirt with the idea of getting away for some late summer sun... and what better place to do so than in Abu Dhabi.
Often overlooked in favour of Dubai, the capital of the United Arab Emirates is a fantastic Middle Eastern destination and the perfect choice for an autumn escape. As the largest of the seven emirates that make up the UAE, Abu Dhabi is bursting with things for the whole family to do, so we thought we would pick out 10 of the best activities there. Grab your sun hat, say goodbye to grey skies and join us as we look at what’s on offer in the enchanting city of Abu Dhabi.
Kick off your trip to the UAE capital in true Abu Dhabi style with a visit to Ferrari World on Yas Island. Kids can test their driving skills at the Junior GT while grown-ups can wiz round the park’s tracks in a classic red supercar!
Another attraction on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island is Yas Waterworld, the city’s newest amusement park, which features 43 rides, slide and attractions. Stay at the nearby 5 star Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi with DialAFlight and save 10 per cent on departures until the 27th October 2013.
Abu Dhabi Mall
Like Dubai, another great reason to visit Abu Dhabi is its shopping facilities. The Abu Dhabi Mall has over 200 shops and is full to the brim with great restaurants, casual cafes and entertainment venues that are perfect for the whole family.
Al Ain Zoo
Though it’s true you can visit a zoo in near enough any country or city you visit, the Al Ain Zoo offers something most zoos do not – the white lion. There are less than 200 of these super-rare lions left in the world and the Al Ain Zoo is one of the few locations that hosts these majestic creatures.
Sir Bani Yas Island
Another great place to get up and close with some wildlife is Sir Bani Yas Island. Home to thousands of animals, including cheetahs, hyenas and the Arabian oryx, this animal park is a great day out and is highly educational too.
Rub al Khali
If you fancy exploring the landscape beyond the tall buildings of Abu Dhabi then head to Rub al Khali. This desolate area in the desert, which was discovered by explorer Wilfred Thesiger, is home to towering dunes and wonderful wadis and is a real treat to explore.
Another activity the whole family can take part in is sand surfing or boarding in the Abu Dhabi Desert. If you don’t fancy taking part in the sport yourself don’t worry, onlookers are welcome too and viewing the boarders in action is almost as much fun!
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Of course, one of the best parts of visiting any Middle Eastern city is soaking up the culture, and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a great place to start. The grand mosque is probably one of the more modern religious structures you’ll encounter in the UAE and it is one of the largest mosques in the world.
Yas Marina Circuit
Petrolheads should not leave Abu Dhabi before taking a trip to the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island. Take a look at our incredible Abu Dhabi Grand Prix packages to get the most out of your stay in the city.
Al Ain City
The Al Ain City is the birthplace of the UAE’s first president, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan. Today it is a beautiful city, with the Al Ain Oasis creating a paradise of birdsong and palm plantations kept green by water sourced from ancient underground wells.
