For the first time in the competition's history, Australia will be making an appearance in the Eurovision Song Contest. With this surprise inclusion, we thought we'd take a look at what makes Australia and Sydney's musical and cultural heritage so appealing and why there's so much more than sandy beaches and adventure excursions.
Sydney is of course famed for it's spectacular, world-renowned Opera House, an imposing figure sitting authoritively on Sydney Harbour and an absolute must for any traveler. A common misconception about the building itself is that it's uncommon to people to actually head inside, opting to take in the exterior views and post that all-too-familiar selfie with the icon. In actuality, it's relatively easy to explore the lesser-known interior either through a guided tour, or by getting your hands on tickets to one of the spectacular performances there.
It would be very wrong though to suggest that Sydney's culture ended there though, very wrong indeed. The city is home to an abundance of inspiring and thought-provoking museums. Included in this category is the White Rabbit Museum, which hosts the world's largest collections of contemporary Chinese art. The gallery is regularly updated and features hundreds of artists at any one time. An alternative experience can be found at the Museum of Sydney, a modern museum which takes you through the city's exploits over the years, exploring the people and the events that make the city what it is today.
It wouldn't be right to mention Sydney's culture without a look at the incredible Vivid Sydney festival with a superb line-up of concert and music performances, public ideas programs, creative industry workshops and conferences to get involved with. Most iconically, the city's landmarks are projected with incredible lights to completely change their appearance in what essentially becomes the world's largest outdoor gallery. Also featured are a whole host of musicians, both in the Opera House and scattered around in bars, restaurants and clubs in the city for incredible experiences and live performances. Finally, the festival brings together business and creative leaders in innovative meetings and discussions to promote new market opportunities.
You can also find some fantastic dance performances in Sydney and the Sydney Dance Company provides you with a tough choice, take in a performance for yourself, take a class or both! Head down to Walsh Bay for an innovative performance and take note of the incredible poise and technique constantly on display. Elsewhere, Bangarra will provide you with an exciting indigenous performance, telling the story of ancient and modern Aboriginal dreamtime through dance.
